Charles T. Low Photography

Recent discussions with Brockville Tourism have prompted me to think about Brockville from the perspective of local or visiting photographers.

I live in Brockville so I photograph in Brockville, I occasionally say. It's pretty well that simple. Similarly, I live in a (small) city, so I photograph (but certainly not exclusively) very happily in a city.

So, my topic here could touch on:

• Photography of Brockville
• Photography from Brockville
• Brockville as a photography-tourism venue

I intend to get to discuss all of them.

In fact, I have published one book, in my burgeoning photography enterprise, and I could have chosen any topic; I chose Brockville in Photographs (twenty-one high-quality, fine-art photographs, all of which I have made in Brockville).

The book by the way, at the time of writing, is available at the Brockville Tourism store (physical or online), which is a great place to pick up a copy, as well as many other Brockvilliana.

The photograph on the cover, incidentally, is of Tall Ships Landing reflected in Tunnel Bay at Blockhouse Island in downtown Brockville.

Both the book and this blog present some of my favourite photographs which involve Brockville. For a travelogue or a visitor's guide, visit Brockville Tourism.

I will say however, completely off topic, that I judge a city (partly) by its restaurants (and independent coffee shops), and in this arena, Brockville outdoes itself. I have been to bigger cities which don't have the variety and quality which we do. It is always difficult to choose which of many fine establishments to patronize.

Photography in Brockville

A committed photographer can make (not take!) photographs anywhere, and ... I'm going to suggest that Brockville contains more than its share of visually fertile scenery. Even aside from some popular sites such as the refurbished Railway Tunnel, it is simply a pretty city. I know this isn't just my personal bias, because so many visitors tell me, Brockville is such a pretty city.

For me, when I stand inside and line up a scene outside the city, it usually either means the St. Lawrence River:

or the Back Pond (Mac Johnson Wildlife Area) from the south (technically I'm no longer in the city, but ... close enough; we're not picky about such things).

Ships

We are, after all, on the Great Lakes Seaway. These amazing machines never cease to awe me. Not every one arrives with a great light, so they often make the photographer work a bit (which is good for us)!

Brockville: Photographer's Destination

I'm not sure that we have give this topic enough thought. For a photographer simply looking for a place to make beautiful (or intriguing) images, for a day or for a lifetime, then Brockville (and area) offers plenty of scope.

I'm sure that one could easily find a local photography guide, if one felt so inclined. I lead photo-walks, or feel free to be in touch with any questions.

Brockville Tourism has its own blog, which could generate ideas.

We have the active Brockville Area Photography Club, an invaluable resource for information, for those nearby looking for a group of like-minded artists.

We have a growing array of professional photographers, for things like portraiture and weddings.

Here are simply two images which I have made which perhaps illustrate that there is lots here to see, if we look.

You could be this person, enjoying a coffee while photographing the sunrise over the river (in March, in this case — we were both there! — but it could be whenever).

I am aware that it's a big world out there, full of wonders, many of which are visual.
